On a topological interpretation of electronic and vibrational molecular energies
1998
Abstract A relationship between Randic's connectivity index and various quantum mechanical parameters derived from the Huckel Molecular Orbital (HMO) approach is demonstrated. When applied to conjugated hydrocarbons, this index represents the measure of the global π electron molecular energy and, therefore, of the resonance energy. Moreover, the development of the procedure, allows the introduction of a new definition of the bond order which, in turn, makes possible a better prediction not only for bond lengths of naphtalene but also for the resonance integral and conjugation energy for butadiene. Also, a corrected value for the Randic index is deduced, which allows for the reduction of the…
Personas izdošana Eiropas Savienībā
2015

Here we investigate the connection between topological order and the geometric entanglement, as measured by the logarithm of the overlap between a given state and its closest product state of blocks. We do this for a variety of topologically-ordered systems such as the toric code, double semion, color code, and quantum double models. As happens for the entanglement entropy, we find that for sufficiently large block sizes the geometric entanglement is, up to possible sub-leading corrections, the sum of two contributions: a bulk contribution obeying a boundary law times the number of blocks, and a contribution quantifying the underlying pattern of long-range entanglement of the topologically-…
The influence of topological phase transition on the superfluid density of overdoped copper oxides
2017
We show that a topological quantum phase transition, generating flat bands and altering Fermi surface topology, is a primary reason for the exotic behavior of the overdoped high-temperature superconductors represented by $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$, whose superconductivity features differ from what is described by the classical Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory [J.I. Bo\^zovi\'c, X. He, J. Wu, and A. T. Bollinger, Nature 536, 309 (2016)]. We demonstrate that 1) at temperature $T=0$, the superfluid density $n_s$ turns out to be considerably smaller than the total electron density; 2) the critical temperature $T_c$ is controlled by $n_s$ rather than by doping, and is a linear function of the $n_s$…
Trace-element partitioning between amphibole and silicate melt.
2007
Knowledge of the partitioning behavior of trace elements between solid and liquid is a prerequisite for modern igneous and mantle petrology. Most of the mathematical models simulating melt generation, migration and evolution within the mantle and/or the crust require the availability of reliable solid/liquid partition coefficients for the mineral phases involved in the process. Calcic amphiboles are extremely important for the understanding of lithospheric processes because of both their common occurrence in a variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks types and their capability of hosting a large number of geochemically important trace elements. A series of studies on the partitioning behavi…
Process specification and verification
1996
Graph grammars provide a very convenient specification tool for distributed systems of processes. This paper addresses the problem how properties of such specifications can be proven. It shows a connection between algebraic graph rewrite rules and temporal (trace) logic via the graph expressions of [2]. Statements concerning the global behavior can be checked by local reasoning.
A Rayleigh-Ritz approach for postbuckling analysis of variable angle tow composite stiffened panels
2018
Abstract A Rayleigh-Ritz solution approach for generally restrained multilayered variable angle tow stiffened plates in postbuckling regime is presented. The plate model is based on the first order shear deformation theory and accounts for geometrical nonlinearity through the von Karman’s assumptions. Stiffened plates are modelled as assembly of plate-like elements and penalty techniques are used to join the elements in the assembled structure and to apply the kinematical boundary conditions. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered and Legendre orthogonal polynomials are employed to build the trial functions. A computer code was developed to implement the propose…
How we compensate for memory loss in old age: adapting and validating the Memory Compensation Questionnaire (MCQ) for Spanish populations.
2012
Compensating entails using external strategies and mechanisms that help overcome or alleviate the decreasing memory function that comes with age. This study aims to adapt and validate the MCQ in the elderly Spanish population. A total of 403 elderly people aged between 65 and 92 in the city of Valencia (Spain) completed the questionnaire for the validation process. The factorial validity of the scale was tested using confirmatory factor analysis. The result showed a first order five-factor model with 23 items that met the criteria for model fit according to multiple fit indices. As a general conclusion, the adaptation into Spanish provided a reliable and valid measure of compensation in the…
Mean-field theory for superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene
2018
Recent experiments show how a bilayer graphene twisted around a certain magic angle becomes superconducting as it is doped into a region with approximate flat bands. We investigate the mean-field s-wave superconducting state in such a system and show how the state evolves as the twist angle is tuned, and as a function of the doping level. We argue that part of the experimental findings could well be understood to result from an attractive electron-electron interaction mediated by electron-phonon coupling, but the flat-band nature of the excitation spectrum also makes the superconductivity quite unusual. For example, as the flat-band states are highly localized around certain spots in the st…
When buyers also sell: The implications of pricing policies for customer satisfaction
2002
In certain purchase situations, such as when a new car is purchased and an old vehicle is traded in, individuals simultaneously play the role of buyers and sellers. It is interesting to observe that, when evaluating the purchase and selling prices of the new and old products respectively, such consumers often fail to behave rationally. For example, a discount on the price of the new commodity and an equivalent markup on the old product will be weighted differently. This empirical phenomenon can be analyzed with the aid of the prospect theory - an approach based on the descriptive decision theory. This theory facilitates the elaboration of decision-making rules for determining the optimum pu…
